Thelma Cain, 82, from Blomfield Road in Allerton shares her memories of living next door to Julia Lennon
The neighbour of John Lennon’s mum has recalled how the Fab Four’s playing used to keep her baby awake.
Thelma Cain lived next door to Julia Lennon when the star’s mum lived on Blomfield Road, in Allerton’s Springwood estate.
The 82-year-old moved into the semi-detached house 58 years ago and said she remembered The Beatles playing music in the bathroom, where the acoustics were better.
She said: “Once, when my daughter was only a few weeks old, I sent my husband round to shut them up.
“He didn’t come back for three hours, he’d been listening to their music and drinking with them!
“Everybody was laughing at him at the time, and saying he couldn’t be trusted to take a message to anyone.”
Thelma added: “I never thought the music was anything wonderful, I felt like telling them to shut up.”
She said neighbours would help out the singer’s mum, who lived there with partner John Dykins and daughters Julia and Jackie, if they hit hard times.
She added: “John Lennon was the model of his mother.”
But she said she didn’t realise the teenager was destined to become a star at the time.
She said: “It was John Dykins who told me they were going to be stars, when they had their first gig.”
And she said she remembered Lennon returning to the house with his wife Yoko Ono in 1970.
She said: “The kids were all talking to them.
“I remember they had blacked out windows in the car and they were pointing at the house.”
Thelma said the street continues to have visitors thanks to its history.
She said: “We get lots of people coming on the Beatles Tour, we see them walking up in droves.
“The lady that used to live in their house used to go out and talk to them.
“When my son-in-law sees them he always waves out of the window. And they wave back.”
The house on Blomfield Road is due to go up for sale at an auction in Liverpool Town Hall on March 31.
Auctioneers Venmores have given the property a guide price of £120,000.
